In-person outreach & service
I once did about 20 to 30 in-person outreach programs a year, at a variety of venues including public and private K-12 classes, clubs, and teams, and groups at zoos, libraries, community events, and amateur societies. When I moved to Europe in 2016 it became a little bit harder (although I am now a B1 level German speaker), but I continued to participate in Skype a Scientist and I tried to do at least one outreach program when I went home for the holidays. I have served on the executive council of the North Carolina Herpetological Society since 2004, where I manage the grants program, and I serve as an associate editor for three journals and as a reviewer for many more. I am a member of the Advisory Committee for HerpMapper and Save the Snakes. These days I do less in-person outreach but more media interviews.

Recordings of public seminars:

  • Archbold Biological Station
  • Herpetological Association of Africa

Online outreach
I write an educational blog — Life is Short but Snakes are Long — which has been read by >1.4 million people. Popular posts include:
  • Why do snakes have two penises?
  • Identifying snake sheds
  • Basics of snake fangs
  • Are there any countries without snakes?
I'm also an administrator for two very active Facebook groups: Snake Identification (>100,000 members) and Wild Snakes: Education & Discussion (>50,000 members). I answer questions on the USDA Ask an Expert portal & I was the host of the @biotweeps Twitter account in 2018 (see e.g. #snaketour).

Radio
I was a science reporting intern at Utah Public Radio (KUSU FM 91.5 Logan) in 2016. You can listen to stories I wrote, recorded & produced here, and hear my contributions to the Wild About Utah series here!
